vidIQ vs TubeBuddy

Verified October 2026

Both tools promise faster YouTube growth. They are genuinely different products, and which one is worth your money depends on what your channel is missing.

The verdict

vidIQ tells you what to make. TubeBuddy optimizes what you already published. If topic selection is your bottleneck the answer is vidIQ, and it is free to find out.

Choose vidIQ if

Your bottleneck is deciding what to make: keyword opportunity scoring, Daily Ideas, and competitor velocity tracking are the best topic-research stack either tool offers, and its free plan is generous enough to prove it before you pay.

Choose TubeBuddy if

Your bottleneck is optimizing what you already publish: live thumbnail A/B testing and bulk back-catalog editing are things vidIQ simply doesn't do, and TubeBuddy's entry tier is meaningfully cheaper.

Skip both if

You already know exactly what to make and your CTR is healthy. Neither tool replaces YouTube Studio; they fill the gap before publishing. Studio alone is fine until topic selection becomes the thing slowing you down.

Tale of the tape

Every metric side by side, the stronger side marked. "Stronger" means for that metric alone; the verdict above weighs them.

Verified against both vendors' current plans, October 2026. Pricing moves often; treat dollar figures as "about" and check the vendor page before buying.

What Each One Actually Is

What vidIQ is

A research platform that happens to ship an extension. The core product is the web app: keyword opportunity scores, niche trend feeds, Daily Ideas generated from your channel's history, an AI coach, and competitor tracking. You go to vidIQ when you're deciding what to film.

  • Identity: topic research and ideation
  • Lives in: its own web app, plus a browser extension
  • Free tier: yes, genuinely usable
  • Headline feature: keyword opportunity score

What TubeBuddy is

An extension that lives inside YouTube Studio and upgrades it. Its tools attach to the workflow you already have: SEO Studio at upload time, bulk editors across your back catalog, publish scheduling, canned responses, and split testing on live videos. You never really "go to" TubeBuddy; it's there when you work.

  • Identity: workflow and optimization
  • Lives in: YouTube Studio, via browser extension
  • Free tier: listed on its free page, not on the main pricing grid
  • Headline feature: A/B testing on live videos

Pricing, tier by tier

Both vendors push annual billing hard, so the per-month numbers below assume it unless noted. Verified October 2026 against each vendor's live pricing page.

vidIQ

Free$0

Niche trends, content ideas, AI Coach tips, 150 AI credits a month

Boost$16.58/mo

On annual billing (about $19 billed monthly). 2,000 AI credits, thumbnail generation, unlimited trends, AI coach

Max$39/mo

Billed yearly. 6,000 AI credits, stronger AI mode, AI short-clipping from long-form

TubeBuddy

Pro$12/mo

On annual billing. Basic title and tag optimization, basic video and thumbnail tools. Content strategy tools are Legend only.

Legend~$26/mo

On annual billing (~$33 monthly). A/B Testing, full SEO access, bulk processing, advanced analytics, 2 user seats

EnterpriseCustom

Required for brands and multi-channel teams; includes training and priority support

Fine print worth knowing

TubeBuddy's creator licenses are for individuals only, and its terms reserve the right to classify you as a business (requiring custom Enterprise pricing) if you run multiple channels on TubeBuddy, pass 50,000 subscribers, have three or more channel managers, or have 50 or more employees. If you're near any of those lines, get a price in writing before committing to an annual plan. Legend includes two user seats; Pro is one.

Where vidIQ wins

vidIQ is a research tool first. Its keyword engine condenses search demand and competition into one opportunity score, so choosing between five possible topics takes seconds instead of a spreadsheet. Daily Ideas generates video topics tuned to your channel's niche and history, which is genuinely useful when the blank-page problem is what's slowing you down. Competitor tracking shows you which videos in your niche are pulling views right now, not just lifetime totals, and the AI coach tier adds masterclass-style guidance on top.

The free plan is the other real advantage. Niche trends, content ideas, AI Coach tips, and a monthly allowance of AI credits cost nothing, which makes vidIQ the obvious first install for a channel that isn't earning yet. You can graduate to Boost when the research workload outgrows the free limits. If you want to know what those earnings could look like first, run your numbers through our YouTube Money Calculator.

Where TubeBuddy wins

TubeBuddy is an optimization tool first, and its feature list reads like a YouTube Studio wishlist: SEO Studio and tag tooling at upload time, Best Time to Publish, Demonetization Audit, Channel Valuation, a Retention Analyzer, and Competitor Scorecards. The headline act is live A/B testing: swap two thumbnails (or titles) on a published video and let real traffic decide. vidIQ has no equivalent, and for channels with enough views to reach significance, a test that lifts CTR by even a point pays for the subscription many times over.

The other win is bulk workflow, and it's bigger than it sounds. Bulk End Screen Editor, Bulk Cards Editor, and bulk find-replace-append across descriptions mean a 300-video back catalog can be updated in an afternoon instead of a month. Channel Backup, Scheduled Publish, Sunset Videos, and canned comment responses round out the workflow case. And it's the cheaper commitment: Pro runs $12 a month on annual billing, comfortably under vidIQ's Boost. The catches: TubeBuddy's main pricing grid shows no free tier, though its free page lists one, and A/B testing lives on Legend at about $26 a month, the most expensive creator tier.

The A/B testing question, honestly

Split testing is TubeBuddy's strongest sales pitch, so it deserves scrutiny. YouTube Studio's built-in A/B testing lets you compare up to three title or thumbnail variants on a video, with the winner chosen on watch time. It runs in desktop Studio, needs advanced features turned on, and does not cover Shorts. TubeBuddy Legend runs inside the same extension as its other tools, so compare its feature list against Studio before paying. If your testing needs are occasional, Studio may be enough.

Both vendors also let you see a thumbnail on a mock YouTube page before publishing: vidIQ's Thumbnail Preview runs in its browser extension, and TubeBuddy's Thumbnail Preview is free. Before any live test, it's worth catching the obvious problems too: our Thumbnail Checker previews and scores a thumbnail on-device with no extension or account, and the Title Analyzer scores a title across eight dimensions before you publish. Neither replaces a live test with real traffic; both will tell you whether a variant is even worth testing.

Verdict by channel type

Brand new channel, no budget

vidIQ

The free plan is the most capable zero-dollar research stack, and you don't need A/B testing before you have traffic to test on.

Small channel, small budget

TubeBuddy

Pro at $12 a month on annual billing is the cheaper paid entry. Keep vidIQ free installed alongside it; the two don't conflict.

Growing channel stuck on topic selection

vidIQ

Boost's opportunity scoring and Daily Ideas are where the subscription earns its price.

Established channel optimizing CTR

TubeBuddy

Legend's split testing and bulk tools, assuming YouTube Studio's built-in A/B testing of titles and thumbnails isn't already answering your questions.

Big back catalog that needs cleanup

TubeBuddy

Bulk end screen and card editors, find-and-replace across descriptions, and channel backup are unmatched on the vidIQ side.

Doing this professionally

Both

They overlap less than their marketing suggests, and the combined bill is still small next to one sponsored video.

How we put this together

Feature claims come from both vendors' current pricing and feature pages, pulled June 2026, not from recycled review roundups; where third-party sources contradicted the vendors' own pages (TubeBuddy pricing in particular), we went with the first-party numbers. Neither company sponsors this page or reviewed it before publication. vidIQ links are affiliate links; TubeBuddy's affiliate program is closed to new partners, so its links here earn us nothing. Pricing changes often enough that we re-verify this page when either vendor restructures plans; if you spot something stale, tell us. More on how we work is on the Methodology page.

Free tools that cover some of this

These three run free with no extension or account, and the earnings math is worth doing before you pay for either subscription.

Frequently asked

Is vidIQ or TubeBuddy better for small channels?
For paying nothing, vidIQ: its free plan includes trends, content ideas and AI credits. TubeBuddy also lists a free plan on its own free page, but its main pricing grid shows only Pro, Legend and Enterprise, and the free page says free does not include thumbnail A/B testing or advanced keyword and SEO tools. For the cheapest paid plan, TubeBuddy Pro at $12 a month undercuts vidIQ Boost at $16.58 a month, both on annual billing. The honest answer for most small channels is vidIQ free until topic research outgrows it, since you do not need A/B testing before you have traffic to test on.
Does vidIQ have thumbnail A/B testing like TubeBuddy?
No. Thumbnail and title A/B testing on live videos remains TubeBuddy territory, available on its Legend tier. vidIQ instead offers AI thumbnail generation, a Thumbnail Preview that shows your video on mock home, search, suggested and mobile pages before you publish, and an Optimize Score that rates your title and thumbnail as you upload. If split-testing thumbnails on a channel with real traffic is your priority, TubeBuddy Legend is the tool; note that YouTube Studio itself now lets you test up to three title or thumbnail variants on a video, which has narrowed this gap.
Does TubeBuddy still have a free plan?
TubeBuddy lists a free plan on its own site, but its main pricing grid shows only Pro, Legend and Enterprise. Check the signup page for what the free plan includes.
Can you use vidIQ and TubeBuddy at the same time?
Yes, and plenty of creators do. They are both browser extensions plus web apps and they do not conflict. A common setup is vidIQ free for trends and content ideas, plus TubeBuddy Pro for bulk operations and publish-time tooling. Start with vidIQ free for a couple of weeks; if workflow friction is what remains, add TubeBuddy.
Which tool has better keyword research?
They tie on data and differ on presentation. TubeBuddy shows keyword trend direction, which helps judge whether a term is gaining or fading. vidIQ condenses search volume and competition into a single opportunity score, which is faster to act on when you are choosing between several topics. Creators who like reading the data lean TubeBuddy; creators who want a quick verdict lean vidIQ.
Do vidIQ and TubeBuddy work for YouTube Shorts?
Both have added Shorts tooling. TubeBuddy lists Suggested Shorts and Shorts linking in its feature matrix, and vidIQ includes AI short-clipping on its Max tier, which pulls clips out of long-form videos. Neither tool changes the fundamental Shorts equation, though: Shorts monetize at a fraction of long-form RPM, so check the math on our YouTube Shorts calculator before building a strategy around them.
Is either tool worth it over just using YouTube Studio?
YouTube Studio tells you how your published videos performed. Neither vidIQ nor TubeBuddy replaces it; they fill the gap before publishing: what topic to make, what keywords to target, how your title and thumbnail compare against what is already ranking. If you already know exactly what to make and your CTR is healthy, Studio alone is fine. The tools earn their cost when topic selection is your bottleneck.
Will these tools actually grow my channel?
They remove friction; they do not create demand. A keyword tool can stop you from making videos nobody searches for, and an A/B test can rescue a good video with a weak thumbnail, but neither fixes content viewers do not want. Treat them like power tools: they make a working process faster, and they make a broken process fail faster too.
